How to Make Fake Snow for Snow Globes

Snow globes delight all ages with their simplistic beauty. They are easy to make and are a simple craft to do with children. The snow you decide to use in your snow globe can change it from a peaceful winter scene to one of summer or it can even celebrate a favorite past time, such as a specific sport.

Things You'll Need

  • Egg Shells
  • Vinegar
  • Food Coloring
  • Water
  • Plastic Zip Top Bag
  • First you need to remove the membrane from inside the egg shells. You can usually peel it off from shells that came from boiled eggs. If you have trouble, you can boil the shells for 2-3 minutes. This will loosen the membrane and make it easier to remove. If you leave the membrane on, it will cause your water to become cloudy and the shells will sink to the bottom of the snow globe instead of swirling around slowly.

  • Place the egg shells in the plastic bag and close the top. Gently crush the shells. Be sure not to crush them too finely, otherwise they will just cloud up the water in the snow globe.

  • If you would like to use colored snow for scenes other than winter ones, you can dye the shells. The best way to do this is prior to removing the shells from the boiled egg. Fill a small bowl with 1 cup of water and add 1 tsp. of vinegar. Add the food coloring one drop at a time until the water is the desired color. Soak the egg in the water until it reaches the desired shade, then allow it to dry completely. Proceed as in step 1 and 2 to make your snow.

Tips & Warnings

  • Snow globes make great gifts. You can make blue or pink snow to celebrate a new baby.
  • Add glitter or plastic confetti to your homemade snow to add visual interest.
  • Food coloring can stain countertops, so be careful and cover your surface before dyeing your eggs.
