How to Make a Flute With a Straw

Making a flute out of a plastic straw is a fun, inexpensive activity for kids, or a cute way for adults to goof off at the end of a meal. It only takes a minute to create; just follow the steps below.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic straw of medium stiffness
  • Scissors
  • Flatten out a couple of inches on one end of the straw.

  • Cut the flattened end of the straw in an upside-down "V" shape. The end will act as a reed acts in a real flute.

  • Put the cut end of the straw in your mouth. The tip should be just a little past your lips.

  • Close your lips around the end of the straw and blow hard. With a little practice, you should be able to produce a musical sound.

  • Now cut small slits into the body of the straw, covering and uncovering the holes to make a tune.

  • To change the "tone" of the instrument, cut the other end of the straw shorter.
