How to Crochet a Hat for Beginners thumbnail
This simple hat requires only basic crochet stitches.

Crocheting a hat doesn't have to be a big ordeal -- even if you are new to crochet. You don't have to master many difficult stitches and, in reality, you don't even have to follow a complicated pattern. Follow along for an easy hat to crochet, and build some confidence in yourself. To crochet a basic hat, you need to know four basic crochet stitches -- chain, single crochet, double crochet and slip stitch, as well as how to finish off.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Start the hat by chaining three stitches. Join with a slip stitch to make a ring.

    • 2

Chain three (counts as first dc, now and throughout). Make 11 double crochet in the ring. Join with a slip stitch to the first dc. You know have 12 double crochets.

    • 3

Chain three, double crochet in the same stitch, 2 double crochet in the next double crochet and in each stitch around; join with a slip stitch into the first double crochet. This will be the base of the hat, which will sit on the crown of the head. Repeat until you have a good base and are ready to build the sides of the hat. When the round you created fits on the crown of your head, you are ready to start on the sides of the hat.

    • 4

Chain three, double crochet in the next double crochet and in each double crochet around. Join with a slip stitch to the first double crochet. Repeat this row, forming the sides of the hat.

If the cap is too long, you can turn up the edge for a cuff-style brim.

When the sides are the length you want, start the final round. Chain 1, single crochet in the same stitch and in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet. Clip the yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail. Thread the tail on a yarn needle and work it into the stitching of the hat to secure.

Tips & Warnings

  • This pattern works best if you have a model available at each stage to try on the hat.

  • Use and H, I or J hook and your cap will work up quickly.

  • Do not make a knot and clip the yarn at the end of the last row, the hat will eventually unravel.

Step 3 doesn't make sense to me. You will get a really ruffled circle if you do 2 in each stitch beyond the third row. After that, you do ch 3, 2dc in next stitch, dc, 2dc, etc. The next row would be ch3, dc in next stitch, 2dc in next stitch, dc in next two, 2dc, etc. Just add one more dc each row between the 2dc's.
