How to Make a Stuffed Horse

Save

Many children love horses. Making a stuffed horse is easy and can be accomplished by any child or adult who is able to use a needle and thread. Here is how to make your own stuffed horse.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 yard of cloth
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Stuffing
  • 2 buttons
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Design your horse.
Lay your cloth out onto a hard surface, such as a table. Fold it in half so that your cloth is doubled with the pattern on the inside. Flatten your cloth out and smooth out any wrinkles. Make sure the underside is facing out. Using a pencil, draw a horse design onto the top side of the cloth, making sure you make the pencil marks visible. Try to draw a horse that does not have small areas or sharp curves because these can be difficult to sew around. Cut your shape.

  • Sew around the horse.
Using your needle and thread, sew around the edges of the horse shape using small stitches. This may take time if you are new to sewing or are a particularly careful sewer. Sew all around the edges, leaving about 2 inches unsewn. Knot the thread. Turn the shape inside out, pulling the right side of the fabric out. You are now ready to stuff your horse.

  • Stuff the horse.
Using your fingers, push the stuffing into the horse shape in little bits. Try to move the stuffing into the smaller areas, such as the ears and legs. Keep stuffing the horse until you are satisfied with the thickness and puffiness of your horse. Then fold under the edges of the hole and sew it closed using small stitches.

  • Attach the eyes.
Now that your horse is sewn together, you can attach the button eyes. Knot your thread and adjust your button over the area where you want the eye to go. Carefully sew around and through the hole of the button and into the cloth of the horse. After you sew through both the button and the cloth about 4 or 5 times, tie off your thread. Repeat this process for the other button eye.

Tips & Warnings

  • Needles are sharp, so be careful when using them.
  • Keep needles out of the reach of small children.
