How to Sew on a Military Patch

You've earned a military honor and are ready to display it. The one thing holding you back is not knowing how to sew it on. Sewing on a military patch is fairly simple, and while you can always take it to a professional and have it embroidered on, it may be more cost effective to sew it on yourself. Even if you don't have the equipment necessary to tightly sew the patch on with a neat embroidery pattern, you can put it on with a needle and some strong thread.

Instructions

    • 1

Pin the patch to the fabric using the safety or straight pins.

    • 2

Thread your needle, and tie both strands of thread together using a double knot.

    • 3

Put a thimble on your thumb or index finger, and use it to push the needle through both layers from under the fabric.

    • 4

Pull the needle through both layers, and push it through both layers again.

    • 5

Work your way around the patch, using the simple stitch described in the previous two steps.

    • 6

Tie off the needle and thread on the last stitch. Cut the thread.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some patches are ironed on, and doing so may be a good option if it available to you. For a more professional look, see if your sewing machine can do a thick, tight stitch around the edge of the patch. You can also sew on a patch using a conventional sewing machine. Simply make sure that your needle is thick enough to sew through the patch and the fabric.
