How to Move a Hot Tub

Moving a hot tub can be dangerous if you don't have the right equipment or know how to move it properly. As long as you have the right equipment and enough people, moving heavy items such as a hot tub can be done with no injuries and without damaging the unit.

Things You'll Need

  • Appliance dolly
  • 4-wheel furniture dollies (2)
  • Tow straps
  • Unplug the hot tub from the electrical current and secure the cord underneath the hot tub within the wood enclosure. Make sure that the motor is still secure. Drain the hot tub completely and then replace the drain cap. Turning the hot tub on its side will make it easier for moving. Give yourself enough room, then have two people on one side and two people to lift the other side up. To start this process, have everyone help lift up the first corner and place a 4x4 piece of wood under the corner. Then do the other side. Make sure everyone is in position to lift the hot tub to its side.

  • Move the hot tub up or down stairs with an appliance dolly. These dollies have straps to secure the hot tub to the dolly so it does not go anywhere and you have complete control over the unit. You should have at least two people on the front and two people on the backside of the hot tub. Going up is easier than going down. Move one step at a time and give the lead person enough time to plan the next step before moving.

  • Move the hot tub on a flat surface with furniture dollies. With the hot tub on its side, place one dolly under the backside and one under the front side. Most dollies come with a strap to secure the unit to the dolly. Make sure the strap is secure so that when you're moving the unit, it doesn't slip off the dollies.

  • Remove the dollies and have one person on each end and two people on the side that will be lowered to the ground. This must be done very slowly so as not to let the hot tub drop. Bring the hot tub down by grabbing the sides and corners. It is wise to have a 4x4 on each corner to rest the hot tub on so you can get your fingers out of the way. Then raise one end, remove the 4x4 and do the other side.
