Making a Mardi Gras masks can be as simple or elaborate as you want it to be. This is an activity that is great for both kids and adults. Wear your mask to a Mardi Gras extravaganza, masquerade, Halloween party, or a dress up party for kids.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Precut mask or cardboard
  • Glitter
  • Feathers
  • Sequins
  • Ribbon
  • Paint
  • Hot Glue
  • Scissors
  • Hole Puncher
  • Elastic String or
  • Popsicle Stick
  1. Step 1

Precut plastic masks are easily found in party stores during any time of year. As an alternative, you can print out a template and trace it onto cardboard and cut out with scissors.

  2. Step 2

If you are cutting your own mask or the blank mask you have purchased does not have holes, use a hole puncher to make holes on the sides of the mask. This is only necessary if you plan on using elastic string to wear the mask.

  3. Step 3

Paint your mask using any colors and pattern you wish, but keep in mind the traditional Mardi Gras colors: Green, Purple, and Yellow.

  4. Step 4

Use hot glue to attach feathers, glitter, sequins, ribbon, or anything you want to the front of your mask. Be careful not to obstruct your vision and don't make it too heavy or it will be hard to wear.

  5. Step 5

Let all decorations dry overnight so that everything is set in place.

  6. Step 6

Cut your elastic string to slightly smaller than will fit from ear to ear behind your head with out stretching and tie each end to the holes at the sides of the mask.

  7. Step 7

Alternatively, use a hot glue gun to attach a popsicle stick that hangs down from one side of the mask.

Tips & Warnings
  • Feathers usually go on one top corner of the mask, but can also stick out from the middle.
  • Be creative! Make your mask your own creation. There is no ONE way to make a Mardi Gras Mask!
  • Supervise children when using hot glue or have them use Elmer's Glue
