Removing a lock is a task most homeowners face from time to time, either when replacing a lock that is faulty or simply replacing one that looks bad. If it is a deadbolt, it may have a latch knob that is used for locking and unlocking the door, or doubled keys, where a key must be used to lock or unlock the door from the inside or outside of the door.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Unlock and open the door.

  2. Step 2

Look at the lock you are about to remove. The lock has two parts: the inside and the outside. The outside will have a place for the key, and the inside part of the lock will either have a latch knob or a place for the key. The inside of the lock is normally located on the inside of the building. The casing around the latch knob is the latch case.

  3. Step 3

Examine the screws located on the inside of the lock. Normally they will be Phillips screws. Locate a screwdriver that will fit the screws. Use a power screwdriver or manual, depending on how tight the screws have been turned.

  4. Step 4

Unscrew and remove screws, and remove the latch case. As you do this, you can reach your hand to the other side of the door and loosen the outside of the lock from the door. As you remove all the screws, the lock will basically fall into pieces.

  5. Step 5

Remove the front, back and bolt from the door. When all the screws have been removed, the lock should easily slip out.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't remove the bolt plate immediately, as you may be able to use it with the new lock.
