How to Make a Family Tree in the German Language
Making family trees are a fun family activity that can be translated into any language. Making a family tree in German is just as easy making a family tree in English; you just need to know some basic German words for family members.
English to German:
Family -- Stammbaum
Mother -- Mutter
Father -- Vater
Son -- Sohn
Daughter -- Tochter
Niece -- Nichte
Nephew -- Neffe
Grandmother -- Grossmutter (or Oma)
Grandfather -- Grossvater (or Opa)
For earlier generations, add "Grossgro" to the beginning of each word. "Great-uncle" would be "Grossgronkel," and "great-grandfather" would be "Grossgrovater."

2
Start with the eldest known family members on both sides of the family. At the top left side, for example, we'll start with your Great Grandma Milly and Great Grandpa Jimmy, whose names in German are Großgromutter Milly and Großgrovater Jimmy
-
-
3
Repeat step two on the right side of the page for your father's side of the family.
-
4
Draw a horizontal line between Großgromutter Milly and Großgrovetter Jimmy
-
5
Then, draw a vertical line down from the line connecting the great-grandparents up above.
-
6
This line will connect to their sons or daughters. For example we'll say they had a son named Jon; to you, he's Großvater Jon.
-
7
Next you'll draw a horizontal line to his wife, who is Großmutter Olga.
-
8
Finally, you connect a vertical line to their child, who is your mother, Maria.
-
9
Next you'll draw a horizontal line connecting your mother to your father.
-
10
The last step is drawing a vertical line to your name. At this point, you can continue on connecting to your siblings, spouse, wife and children.
