Kids love to wear clothing and accessories that allow them to express themselves and show off their interests. If that interest happens to be softball, then a softball seam bracelet will be an appreciated keepsake. Softball seam bracelets also make thoughtful gifts for a softball team. Although any softball will do, this craft is one way to memorialize the game-winning ball.
Things You'll Need
- Utility knife
- Stable surface
- Fabric Glue
- Hook and loop tape with adhesive backing
Place the softball on a hard, stable surface. With one hand, hold the ball firmly. With the other, carefully grasp a utility knife.
Slice the skin of the softball along the seam with the utility knife. Leave approximately one-half inch of skin on either side. Keep the cut smooth, and neatly follow along the pattern of the seam until the entire seam is free of the skin.
Remove the seam from the softball. Once removed, you should have an elongated, circular-shaped piece of softball skin with attached seam.
Cut the softball seam to fit your wrist and apply fabric glue to the cut threads to secure them in place so they don't unravel. Trim both sides of the attached skin until the softball seam bracelet is the desired width.
Trim the hook and loop tape strip to approximately 1/2 inch in length. The hook and loop tape that is sold in strips is connected, meaning that the male and female piece are joined and can be pulled apart. Separate the connected strip and remove the paper backing from each of the hook and loop tape pieces, exposing the adhesive.
Attach the female side of the hook and loop tape to one end of the softball seam bracelet by pressing it onto the inside of the bracelet, adhesive side down. Attach the male side of the hook and loop tape to the outside of the other end of the bracelet, also adhesive side down. Press the hook and loop tape down firmly to secure it. Wrap the bracelet around your wrist and join it with the hook and loop tape.
Tips & Warnings
- If your child is a baseball fan, the same craft can be done with a baseball by following the above steps.
- A utility knife is extremely sharp. Use it carefully. Make sure you have a good grip on the softball before you begin to make your cuts.
