How to Fix a Leaky Kitchen Sink Drain

An initial drain leak diagnosis is best done by getting underneath your sink and testing connections. If connections are tight and the leak persists, disconnect the drain pipes and check for cracked pipes, cracked seals, obstructions or other problems. Correcting problems with household plumbing is actually very simple if you can find the correct replacement parts.

• Slip joint nut and washer
• P-trap for a kitchen sink (if necessary, in the correct diameter)
• Small catch pan or bucket

1. Drain the sink of all residual water to decrease the possibility of dripping.

2. Place a catch pan or a small bucket under the drain.

3. Test the slip joint nuts to see if they are tight. If they are tight where the leak is occurring, unscrew that nut and the nut at the end of the p-trap and remove it. There may be water still in the p-trap; drain the p-trap into the bucket or catch pan.

4. Look over the pipe ends, the nuts and the washers for cracks, deterioration or other signs of damage. Also check the sink pipe and the pipe going into the wall for damage or deterioration. If any problems are discovered, replace the p-trap and any other sections that may need replacement.

5. There may not be visual damage, but it is still a good idea to replace slip joint washers, and make sure the nuts are securely fastened.

6. Run the water for a minute or two to test the joints. If the leak persists, replace the p-trap and all associated slip joint nuts.
