Dimmer switches add a whole new dimension to your home's lighting. With dimmers on your lights you can set the brightness and alter the look of your home to match the occasion and your mood. Lutron is a popular and respected manufacturer of dimmer switches, and their products are well suited for installation by the do-it-yourselfer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lutron dimmer switch Wire nuts Screwdriver
  1. Step 1

Turn off the power. Turn off the circuit that you're working on at the circuit breaker box. If you're uncertain which circuit you're working on, turn off the main power switch to your house while you're working.

  2. Step 2

Remove the wall plate covering your existing light switch with a screwdriver. Unscrew the existing light switch from the gang box and then disconnect the black and green wires attached to it.

  3. Step 3

Connect the Lutron dimmer switch to the wiring. Using wire nuts, connect the existing black wiring leads to the black wires on the back of the Lutron dimmer switch. Do the same with the green wire (the ground). The white wires will already be connected together.

  4. Step 4

Mount the Lutron dimmer switch into the gang box, then cover with the switch plate that came with the dimmer switch. Tighten the screws securely with your screwdriver.

  5. Step 5

Turn the electrical circuit back on and test the operation of your Lutron dimmer switch.
