You can buy books directly through Amazon and have them sent to your Kindle at a very reasonable price. Other options are free books from Project Gutenberg or PlanetEbook. The following instructions are for downloading to your Kindle from PlanetEbook.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Kindle
  • Internet
  • PDF software
  • Kindle Email account
  1. Step 1

The first thing you need to know is your Kindle email address. Sign on to Amazon.com and choose the "Manage my Kindle" tab. On that tab you will find your kindle email address. Amazon allows you to send PDFs to your Kindle at no charge. The instructions for your Kindle indicate there is a small charge, but my experience so far is that no charge is incurred.

  2. Step 2

    Sign on to PlanetEbook. http://www.planetebook.com/

  3. Step 3

Select a title from their list of books. While writing this article I downloaded The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy. Currently, this book is not available for download to a Kindle through Amazon.com.

  4. Step 4

Select your title. The book pops up quickly. You can either read it online or save it as a PDF.

  5. Step 5

You could read the document directly on your computer or send it to your Kindle account via email.

  6. Step 6

In order to send to your Kindle you need to know two things. The first is the email address of your Kindle. The other is the approved address for emailing to your Kindle. Both can be found on the "Managing Your Kindle" tab on Amazon.com.

  7. Step 7

Email the document to your Kindle email address from the approved email address.

  8. Step 8

Amazon loads the PDF to your reader. When you order a book for your Kindle from Amazon.com, it downloads it within minutes. When you send a PDF, it takes a little longer. Usually not more than a five minutes, but longer than ordering directly from Amazon.

Tips & Warnings
  • I do not have a Sony Reader but I would imagine the steps to download a book and send it via PDF would be similar.
  • If you are an English major, downloading classics can save you money.
