How to Make a Diaper Cake Centerpiece

Make a unique centerpiece for a baby shower while giving a usable gift to the parents-to-be. A diaper cake is a beautiful conversation piece that is a standalone centerpiece. You can share in the expense with another guest or two and add items to the display that the new baby will need. Choose a theme such as Noah's ark, angel baby, farm animals, monkeys or Jack and Jill (twins) for example. The diaper cake can be set on a cake stand for a special featured centerpiece at the shower.

Things You'll Need

  • Disposable or cloth diapers 100 newborn
  • 8-ounce baby bottle
  • Clear or white small rubber bands
  • Roll of white kitchen twine
  • Scissors
  • 8 to 10 yards ribbon or lace 1 to 2 inches wide
  • Curling ribbon, small bows or baby corsages
  • Tiny stuffed animal
  • Baby shampoo, clippers, socks and other needs
  • 16-inch cardboard circle
  • Cake plate or cake stand
  • Silk flowers
  • 16-inch cake ruffle

The Tiers

  • Unfold all of the diapers. Place in a pile on your clean work surface.

  • Roll all of the diapers tightly and fasten each one with a rubber band around the center.

  • Place the baby bottle on the work surface. Place 5 to 6 diaper rolls around it. Wrap white kitchen twine around center of the diapers and bottle. Tie the twine securely to hold all in place.

  • Measure the circumference of the top tier. Cut a piece of ribbon to match the top-tier circumference plus 2 inches.

  • Wrap ribbon around the center of the top tier. Overlap the ends and adhere with a glue gun. Use caution to keep the glue away from the diapers.

  • Arrange 15 to 20 rolled diapers in a circle and tie with twine to secure. Measure the circumference of the tier and cut a piece of ribbon 2 inches longer than the measurement. Wrap around the twine and glue gun in place at the point where the ribbon overlaps.

  • Arrange remaining diapers in a circle on top of the 16-inch cardboard cake circle. If you are working alone, wrap twine around as many of the diapers as you can handle at once and tie to secure.

  • Continue adding more diapers and keep the circular shape form while securing with the twine. If you have help from another person, one can hold the circle of diapers while the other person wraps the twine around them. Wrap the entire tier two times with the twine for extra support.

  • Measure the circumference of the bottom tier. Add 2 to 3 inches to the measurement. Cut ribbon piece and hot glue in place.
Remove the tier from the cardboard circle. Set aside.

Assemble the Layers

  • Cut off a 5-inch piece of medical adhesive tape and roll inside out and stick the ends together. Place on the 16-inch cake circle. Make 3 or 4 more of these sticky rings of tape. Place on the plate. Lift the bottom tier of secured diapers and place on top of the taped cardboard.

  • Make 4 more adhesive tape sticky rings and place them on the bottom diaper tier. Place tier No. 2 on the center of the bottom tier.

  • Add 2 to 3 medical adhesive tape rings on to the middle tier. Place the top tier on to the tape to secure in place.

  • Decorate the cake by placing silk blossoms around the outer rims of the cake layers. The blossoms should be detached from the wire stems and tucked between the diaper rolls. Add ribbon bows or cascades of curling ribbon. Bows and ribbon can be glued to the ribbon that encircles each layer.

  • Top the cake with one or two small stuffed animals. Place a sprig of silk flowers carefully down into the area near the baby bottle, being careful to keep wire from poking into a diaper. Add bows or puffs of curling ribbon.

  • Place any small gifts for baby into the cake. Tuck in a small brush and comb, fingernail clippers and bottles of shampoo and lotion next to the twine support.

Cake Frosting Option

  • Take a flannel baby blanket and fold it in half lengthwise.

  • Wrap the blanket around the prepared tier of secured diapers.

  • Pin the blanket at the back of the cake.

  • Wrap a band of ribbon around the center of the cake tier over the blanket. Hot glue in place.

  • Cover the seam of the ribbon with a decoration. Ribbon bows, washcloth rosette, a baby rattle or stuffed toy will work.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sketch your cake ideas before beginning the assembly of the diaper cake centerpiece.
  • Be sure to use medical tape sparingly to keep the diapers from being torn. Every item in the cake should be useful to the new mother.
