How to Make an Eye Pin

Eye pins are an important finding when making beaded and other jewelry. Making eye pins yourself adds value to your jewelry, gives you more flexibility in metals you can use and will save you both time and money. This tutorial will show you how to make an eye head pin for your beaded jewelry.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • round wire
  • wire cutters
  • needle nose pliers
  • nylon jawed pliers
  • needle file or cup burr
  • plastic or raw hide mallet and bench block
  1. Step 1

    Gather your tools and wire. Clean your wire and remove tarnish, if any.

  2. Step 2
    Straighten the wire.
    Straighten the wire.

    Cut your wire from 2 to 5 inches, depending on the length eye pin you will need. Straighten the wire with nylon pliers or by pulling with your fingers. File both ends with a needle file or cup burr so that there are no jagged edges.

  3. Step 3
    Use your round nose pliers.

    Place your round nose pliers at one end of the wire to create the eye.

  4. Step 4

    Use your round nose pliers to make a small loop at the end of the wire. Adjust as needed until the loop at the end sits centered on the top of the wire.

  5. Step 5
    Use plastic mallet to harden wire.

    Gently hit the eye pin with a plastic or raw hide mallet to harden the wire.

  6. Step 6
    Slide bead on eye pin.

    Your eye pin is now ready for beading!

Tips & Warnings
  • Any size gauge or type of metal can be used when making eye pins. Match the wire with the beads you are using.
  • Most commercial eye pins are made with 21 to 25 gauge wire or wire that has a thickness of .014 to .028 inches thick.
  • Most commercial eye pins are made to have a length of from 1/2 to 4 inches.
  • Be sure to wear eye goggles when cutting wire.
  • Be sure to file wire ends thoroughly. Sharp edges are not comfortable or safe to wear.
