You don't need a wedding florist when you can make these inexpensive topiary centerpieces yourself for under $10.00 each. These floral arrangements are easily made with silk flowers and birch twigs, and they make stunning wedding centerpieces, but they could also be as decorations to grace your table for any other celebration or special occasion. Choose the colors of silk flowers to match your wedding colors and style, or to match your decor.
Things You'll Need
- Silk flowers
- Birch twigs
- Birch sticks
- Florist foam 5-inch ball
- Florist foam block
- Floral container
- Floral moss
- Floral wire
- Glue gun
- Wire cutters
Prepare the silk flowers by cutting each one from the wire stem using wire cutters. Cut each flower, leaving 1 inch of a wire stem on each one.
Add the flowers by sticking the wire stem directly into the foam ball. Go around the whole ball, leaving only the bottom half empty to add the birch sticks.
After covering with the artificial flowers, add the birch twigs all around the topiary ball, sticking them into the foam between the flowers. Snip them to a length you like.
Prepare two birch sticks as the trunk of your topiary. Adjust the length if necessary so they are as long as you want them, both the same length. Wire the two sticks together at the top and at the bottom with floral wire. Use sticks that aren't totally straight to form interesting lines for the trunk.
Attach the birch sticks to the topiary. Push them into the foam 1 inch deep. Remove them, and use the hot glue gun to add glue to the top of the birch sticks. Put them back into foam, this time pushing an extra 1/2 inch.
Fill in around the bottom of the foam ball with more silk flowers. Add the flowers around until it is full.
Cut your foam block to fit inside the floral container. You may want to add something small and heavy to fit in the bottom of your container, to keep the topiary from becoming top heavy. Small rocks or sand will work.
Gently push the bottom of your trunk of birch sticks into the block of foam, then pull them out and add hot glue all around the hole, and to the bottom of your sticks. Press the sticks back into the hole in the foam, and insert an extra 1/2 inch.
Add the floral moss all around the base.
