Things You'll Need:
- jumper cables
-
Step 1
The first method for jump starting a car battery would be to use your jumper cables connected to a car battery. It is important to remember that a car battery has more amperage than that of a motorcycle, so you want to be sure to only jump a motorcycle from a car battery when the car is turned off.
-
Step 2
Walk the motorcycle over to the car or park the car over by the motorcycle and TURN OFF THE CAR.
-
Step 3
Now take your jumper cables and connect one of the red clamps of the jumper cable to the positive terminal on your dead motorcycle battery.
Then connect one of the black clamps of the jumper cable to the negative terminal on the dead motorcycle battery, or to the frame of the motorcycle to ground it. -
Step 4
Next connect the other black clamp of the jumper cable to the negative terminal on the car battery. Now connect the other red clamp of the jumper cable to the positive terminal on the car battery. DO NOT START THE CAR.
-
Step 5
Start the motorcycle with the good battery and wait a few minutes.
Start the motorcycle with the dead battery
Remove the RED cables first from the good battery, then from the bad battery.
Remove the BLACK cables from both batteries.
Leave the motorcycle with the bad battery running until you reach your destination and/or find a suitable place to re-charge the battery with a battery charger. -
Step 6
Wait a few minutes and then try to start the motorcycle. If it does not start at first, just give it enough time to charge - DO NOT START THE CAR, as this may damage the motorcycle battery.
-
Step 7
Once the motorcycle is started, do not turn it off until you can get to a service station to get a new battery.
-
Step 8
If you happen to be around a bunch of other motorcycles, then you can jump the dead motorcycle battery using the juice from another motorcycle. The steps are the same as they are above. When using a motorcycle to jump another motorcycle, keep the motorcycle with the good battery turned off when hooking up the jumper cables.
-
Step 9
Once the two motorcycles are hooked up, turn on the motorcycle with the good battery, and let the dead battery charge for a little while. Try turning on the motorcycle with the dead battery after a few minutes. Remember to leave the motorcycle on until you get to a service station where you can replace the battery.
