Realize that normal household dishwashers have evolved into lighter machines that distributors do not expected to last quite so long, since they know that people tend to remodel their kitchens about every 10 years. There are many options for the top-of-the-line machines--digital readouts, silent operations, pre-rinse options, pull-out drawers--and manufacturers pride themselves on using high quality materials. These machines might last a little longer than the simple rinse, wash and dry machines, and will undoubtedly do a better job for a longer time.

Determine how often you plan to use it. If you run it 3 times a day, then plan on it only lasting for about 3 years. If you run it once a week, then it might last 12 years. It should have a life span of three uses per week for 10 years. You might get a little more out of it if you do maintenance on it every 6 months. Should you find an old dishwasher made in the 1950s that was well kept and not used too much, you might get another 20 to 30 years out of it if the hoses and wiring are still in good condition.

Only load enough dishes so the swing arm of the water sprayer can move freely. Use the recommended amount of dishwasher detergent for your machine. Once a month, wipe out any grease or buildup along the door gaskets. Do not wash your dishes before you load them or the detergent will bubble up too much if it does not have food particles to clean. Use a rinse aid for clear and sparkling dishes. Check the plumbing once every 6 months for leaks along the hoses under the sink.
