Things You'll Need:
- Scissors
- empty soda bottle
- dowel or twig
- masking tape
-
Step 1
Take an empty 2 litter plastic soda bottle and rinse it out and allow to dry. Put the lid back on. A few inches from the bottom make a hole with a drill or pencil so you can have a place to begin cutting.
-
Step 2
Cut a hole about as large as the front of the bottle. It can be square or round. Tape the sides of the hole so it is not left with a sharp edge.
-
Step 3
Use a hole punch or a sharp object like an ice pick and make a small hole just below your cut out hole. Stick a 4 or 5 inch wooden dowel piece or small stick into the hole to create a perch for a small bird.
-
Step 4
Fill the bottle to a bit below the cut hole with birdseed, stale bread, carrot peelings anything small songbirds will eat. They love fresh greens in the winter if you have outside lettuce or cabbage leaves.
-
Step 5
Hang the feeder with string or twine from any tree branch or porch overhead beam. Put it in a place you and your kids can watch from a window. If birds are reluctant to go in sometimes a small cardboard ring twice as wide as the bottle can be secured above the hole so they feel protected. If your area has hawks that keep the birds on edge you should do this.
