How to Apply Chalkboard Paint to Walls

How to Apply Chalkboard Paint to Walls thumbnail
Kids love the chalkboard!

Chalkboard Paint is really cool and loads of fun for kids. It works well in playrooms and can also add a fun aspect to a single wall in bedrooms. The only catch is that the walls must be prepared properly and the actual chalkboard paint applied evenly for the best results. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Wall primer/sealer (Grey)
  • Good 2-1/2" latex brush
  • Roller handle
  • 1/4" nap (thickness) roller sleeve
  • Mohair roller sleeve

Instructions

    • 1

The wall(s) need to be free of cracks and holes before you can effectively apply the chalkboard paint. Refer to my articles on sheetrock and plaster repairs for step-by-step guidance for these processes. If the walls are in good shape, proceed to Step 2.

    • 2

Once the walls are repaired, thoroughly sand the entire surface with the medium grit sandpaper. This is really important because chalkboards are smooth! Picture the chalk "catching" and "bouncing" off little bumps...not so good! After completely sanded, wipe down with damp sponge. Use the masking tape to protect baseboards, crown moldings, etc.

    • 3

Use the brush and the 1/4" nap (thickness) roller to apply the prime coat. Don't put this on too heavily...really work it into the surface to spread it thinly and evenly. An old trick is to make "V"s with the roller and then finish with long strokes from ceiling to floor, working towards the wet edge.

After the primer has dried, lightly sand the entire surface again and wipe clean.

Use the brush and the mohair roller to apply two coats of the actual chalkboard paint. use the same rolling method as with the primer. Allow to dry well between coats.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't see ready-mixed grey primer, ask the store to tint it for you.

  • There is a reason that some roller sleeves are more expensive than others...get good ones for this application!

  • Thick roller sleeves will apply the paint faster but will result in "orange peel" surface, which is not conducive to the chalkboard look or feel.
