How to Heat Press Vinyl
Heat pressing vinyl transfers onto shirts and other garments is a specialized process that requires a great deal of attention to get just right. However, once you get the hang of safely and efficiently working the equipment, it's a great way to get creative. A large part of learning how to heat press vinyl is to pay attention to the directions both on the heat press and on the transfers to ensure that the right temperature is being applied to the transfer for the correct length of time.

1
Lay the vinyl transfer with the design etched onto it flat on a tabletop, vinyl side up (the design will be backward). Use the X-Acto knife to gently peel up the corner of the vinyl, being careful not to damage the clear backing. Peel up all of the extra vinyl on the transfer so that only the design remains on the transfer.
-
2
Set the heat press to the correct temperature for the vinyl transfer. Look at the package that the transfer came in to determine the appropriate temperature for the transfer and the fabric of the T-shirt.

3
Spread the T-shirt, front side up, on the opened heat press. Make sure to smooth away any wrinkles and to center the shirt on the plate.
-
4
Place the vinyl transfer, backing side up, on top of the T-shirt. Lower the top plate of the heat press, locking it into place, and leave it there for the amount of time recommended on the vinyl transfer's packaging (usually about 10 seconds).
-
5
Lift the top plate of the press. Depending on the type of vinyl transfer being used, the backing should either be removed immediately or the shirt should cool before the backing is removed. Consult the packaging to be sure as removing the backing at the wrong time can damage the transfer.
