Leg warmers are a holdover from the eighties. They slip over socks or tights and keep your lower legs warm when it is cold outside. If you are thinking of giving a set of leg warmers as a gift, you can make your gift more personal by crocheting them instead of visiting your local store and simply buying them. You will use stitches that you are familiar with, and decide on a color which will be chosen with the recipient in mind.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Size 6 mm or J hook Worsted weight yarn, your choice of color, one skein
  1. Step 1

Work on row one. Chain 40. Half-double crochet in each stitch, chain three for turning chain. You will begin stitching row twp with double crochet. For a girl's leg warmers, chain 35. Half-double crochet in each stitch and chain three for turning chain, as with adult leg warmers. You will begin row two with double crochet.

  2. Step 2

In row two, double crochet in each stitch and chain two for the turning chain. Row three will be half-double crochet. For girl's leg warmers, follow this step as well.

  3. Step 3

In row three, half-double crochet in each double crochet and chain three for your turning row. Row four will be double crochet. Follow this step for girl's leg warmers.

  4. Step 4

In row four, double crochet in each half-double crochet and chain two for the turning row. From row five to the end, you will continue alternating half-double crochet and double crochet. Remember to chain the correct number for the row you are coming to. Instructions for this step also apply to girl's leg warmers.

  5. Step 5

When your leg warmers are the length that you want them to be, giving room for scrunching, fold the piece in half lengthwise. Slip stitch the leg warmers closed, working through all stitches. Finish off and weave in ends. Do the same for girl's leg warmers.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you need to make a smaller leg warmer, adjust the beginning chain down from 40 for adults and down from 35 for girls. To adjust for a larger leg warmer, increase your chain to 42 or 44 for a woman and 36 to 37 for a girl. Remember to stitch enough rows so that your recipient can scrunch the leg warmers down for added warmth.
