How to Crochet Leg Warmers

Save

Warm up both your legs and your fashions with hand-crocheted leg warmers. Even beginners can handle this project which uses only chain, double and slip stitches. Once you’ve mastered the pattern, you can easily adjust the sizes to create personalized gifts for all the ladies in your life.

Simply Patterned Leg Warmers

With variegated yarn, your leg warmers will look like you’ve worked a complex pattern instead of simple double-crochet stitches.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 skeins variegated worsted-weight yarn

  • 6 mm crochet hook

  • Tapestry or crewel needle

Step 1

Chain 35. Fit the chain around the widest part of your calf without stretching. Add or pull out stitches, as needed, to make it fit.

Step 2

Join the ends with a slip stitch to make a circle. Be sure that the chain is not twisted before you join them.

Step 3

Chain three, then double crochet into each chain around the circle. Join to the third chain with a slip stitch.

Step 4

Repeat the chain three, double crochet around, join pattern until you have 28 rows.

Step 5

Finish off and weave in the yarn ends.

Stretchy Leg Warmers

Create a pair of leg warmers with a thin band to hold them in place when you switch to a yarn with a little extra stretch.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 skeins stretchy yarn

  • 9 mm hook

  • Tapestry or crewel needle

Tip

  • To make sure your leg warmers will stretch correctly, crochet these loosely, leaving a little extra slack in the stitching.

Step 1

Chain 27 and fit the chain to your calf. If you need to add or remove stitches, make sure the number of stitches in the chain is a multiple of three.

Step 2

Join the chain into a ring with a slip stitch, checking that the chain does not twist.

Step 3

Chain three and double crochet twice in the first chain of the foundation chain. Skip two chains and make three double-crochet stitches in the next chain. Repeat the skip two chains and make three double-crochet stitches in the same chain the rest of the way around the ring. Join with a slip stitch.

Step 4

Chain three and make two double-crochet stitches in the space between the first clusters. Make three double crochets in each space around. Join with a slip stitch.

Step 5

Repeat the last row until you have a total of 24 rows, chaining three between each row.

Step 6

Chain three and make one double-crochet stitch in the back loops only of each double crochet around the ring. Join with a slip stitch and repeat for a total of three band rows.

Step 7

Finish off and weave the ends.
