1
Plan ahead. The more time you have, the more options you can pursue for celebrating your anniversary. If you wait until the night before, you'll have to scratch ideas off your list simply because there is no time to get them done. That doesn't mean you have to spend months planning (though you can), but even a week or two can make the difference between a good anniversary and a great one.

2
Set aside time. Whether you want to go away for the weekend or just go out to dinner, set aside all other concerns for that amount of time. Find a babysitter and turn off your cellphone so your partner knows she is the center of attention.

3
Choose an event of significance. Go back to the restaurant from your first date or the spot where you proposed. If you went to Mexico on your honeymoon, choose a setting that reminds you of that time.
-
4
Pick a "forever" spot. Restaurants go out of business and buildings get torn down. Pick a spot that will stand the test of time and create new romantic memories. Beaches, lakes, mountains or any natural spot can become your special romantic place.

5
Have a party. Though you should spend some alone time with your significant other, parties are a great way to celebrate milestones in your relationship. Especially for big anniversaries (20 years, 50 years, etc.) family and friends want to be involved. For a party bring out pictures from your wedding day or ask guests to dress in the style from that decade.

6
Celebrate according to the year's theme. By tradition, each anniversary has a theme. For instance, the first anniversary is paper (the typical modern gift is a clock, though), the second anniversary is cotton, the third is leather, etc. Build your celebration around the theme (see Resources below).
-
7
Make something. Write a poem, compile a scrapbook or create a music playlist. These are simple and relatively inexpensive ideas that mean a lot to your main squeeze. Items like love poems and scrapbooks can mean a lot to your children and grandchildren even after you are gone.

8
Do a "this is your life" show. This works best at a party where others can add their memories and enjoy the fun. Show pictures and ask trivia questions of the couple's life. Show how far they have come and all that they have accomplished together.

9
Have a custom novel written. Companies like Custom Novels will take your personal information and write a customized novel featuring you and your significant other as characters in the novel. This is a great gift for avid readers or anyone who wants to give a fun, unique gift (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
For non-wedding or non-romantic anniversaries (such as company anniversaries) consider a theme party, which allows you to focus your planning on one kind of event.
