How to Make your Own Postcards

How to Make your Own Postcardsthumbnail
Commercial postcards are widely available, but you can make your own.

Postcards can be a fun and inexpensive way to send personalized messages through the postal system. They cost less than a letter and you can easily make your own. When you make postcards you can include your own photographs, drawings or paintings you have made, and even fabric and lace. Postcards with fabric and lace will have to be sturdy enough to make it to the destination, but can be mailed if taken to the local post office and hand cancelled. Consider making custom postcards for invitations, greetings and thank-yous to your friends and family.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Four by six index cards
    • Printer (optional)
    • Markers, colored pencils or pen
    • Paint (optional)
    • Paint brushes (optional)
    • Digital photos or digital art (optional)
    • Fabric (optional)
    • Glue (optional)
    • Rubber stamps (optional)
    • Stamp pad (optional)
    • Embossing powder (optional)
    • Heat gun (optional)
      • 1

Place a four by six index card in your printer and print any digital media on the front. Printing should be done before any embellishments are added. It is difficult to put anything through a printer if you have already glued or taped something on it.

Enhance the printed media with paint, markers or colored pencils as desired.

      • 3

Turn the postcard over and, with the card placed horizontally, write your return address in the top left corner. Write a short message on the left half of the card. Then write the address of your intended recipient on the right half of the card. Place a stamp in the upper right corner.

Turn the postcard back over and add any embellishments you want. You will need to keep the surface relatively flat, but you can glue or securely tape things to the front if you do not mind getting the piece hand cancelled.

Use rubber stamps to add additional features. You can sprinkle embossing powder over fresh ink from a rubber stamp, shake off the excess, and then melt it with a heat gun. This will leave a sparkly raised effect on the front of the postcard.

    Tips & Warnings

    • You actually do not have to put anything on the front of the card unless you want to. It is just a fun display area that you can decorate with your own custom design.

    • The United States Postal Service requires that postcards be no larger than 4.25 inches by six inches. Even if you are using a different kind of card stock, a four-by-six index card serves as a handy template to get the correct size. Simply trace it onto the desired card stock and cut to size.
