How to Make a Grappling Hook

A grappling hook is a tool used in climbing. A hook is attached to a rope and thrown into the air. The hook snags around something that will hold the rope in place. The climber ascends the rope without ever having to tie it in place. A grappling hook can be reused an unlimited number of times. The climber simply picks it up and begins again.

Things You'll Need

• Metal rods
• Rope
• Metal bender

Instructions

1. Begin with a pair of heavy metal rods. The rods must be strong enough to support the weight of an average person. Test out the rods by placing them between two low walls or pieces of furniture. Press down on them to see if they will support your weight. The rods do not need to be very long, but they should be of equal size.

2. Bend each rod into a bow shape. You may have to use a metal bender. Take the ends of each rod and turn them upward into an "L" shape. If you can, bring the top of the "L" back over toward the main part of the rod. The more the ends resemble hooks or barbs, the better your grappling hook will be.

3. Make a cross shape out of the two rods by placing one rod on top of the other. Tie the two rods securely together. You can also use metal screws. The rods should be completely immobile.

4. Attach a long and heavy rope to the center of the two rods. To use your grappling hook, twirl it around like a lasso and throw it up into the air. The two rods that form the hook should catch onto something above you. You can use the edge of a wall, a tree branch, a rock or anything similar.

Tips & Warnings

• Always make sure your grappling hook is securely attached to whatever you threw it onto. Give the rope a few sharp pulls before attempting to climb.
