This will demonstrate how to create a half double crochet. The abbreviation for this stitch is HDC = Half Double Crochet.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Crochet Hook
  • 4-ply yarn
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle
  1. Step 1

    Chain 10

  2. Step 2

    Wrap the yarn over your hook and insert through the second chain from the hook.

  3. Step 3

    Wrap the yarn over your hook and pull through the chain. You will have 3 loops on your hook.

  4. Step 4

    There are some similarities to the double crochet but the next step is what makes it different.

  5. Step 5

    Wrap the yarn over your hook.

  6. Step 6

    Pull through all 3 loops to complete your half double crochet.

  7. Step 7

    Each half double crochet will be completed the same way across to the end.

  8. Step 8

    For the second row you will do a Chain 2, turn.

  9. Step 9

    The chain 2 is the step to get up to the next row. The chain 2 for the half double crochet will count as the first half double crochet of each row.

  10. Step 10

    For each stitch across, you will wrap the yarn over your hook and insert the hook below the two loops at the top of the stitch in the previous row.

  11. Step 11

    Wrap the yarn over the end of your hook.

  12. Step 12

    Pull through. You will have 3 loops on your hook.

  13. Step 13

    Pull through all 3 loops to complete your half double crochet.

  14. Step 14

    Continue making half double crochet across until you complete your row.

Tips & Warnings
  • Counting is important with the half double crochet. Your piece will either get smaller or wider if your count is not accurate.
