Lego desktop pen and pencil holder

Give the desk or counter a different bit of color and fun by creating a Lego desktop pen and pencil holder. You can mix and match the colors, or make one that goes with the colors of the room. The Lego brick holder will add a touch of whimsy to any desktop. Have the kids make one for Mom or Dad to use in the office and give it to them as a homemade present for a holiday, birthday, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. Adults can even have a good time creating their own original desk accessories.

Instructions

Pick the size pen and pencil holder you want. Remember it needs to be large enough and sturdy enough to hold the pens and pencils without falling over. Make sure that there is a base that will hold the size Lego holder you want. If one of the flat ones is not available, then put a jar, can or small box inside of the holder to keep the pens and pencils from falling through the bottom. This is a good way to recycle a jar or can too. Using that option, the design of the holder can be changed and rebuilt periodically for fun, without having to dump all the pens and pencils out of the inner liner while the outside is being redesigned and rebuilt. Use both the base and add insert to make it extra sturdy.

Begin building the structure from the bottom up. If you are inserting a separate holder in the middle, build it around the holder. Leave enough room for it to be removed easily from the Lego frame. Build it tall enough to hide the underlying holder completely so that you cannot see it. Also make it tall enough so the holder won’t topple over if pens or pencils tip too much to one side or another. There has to be enough structure and weight to keep it upright.

Try building a pattern into the sides or give it more texture by adding pieces that stick out on the outside to give the pen and pencil holder more visual interest. Add some of the odd pieces like turning wheels, painted eyes or even some of the Lego people to make it really different.
