Illuminate your Halloween

A luminary can light the way for trick-or-treaters of all ages on Halloween night. This spooky craft is easy enough for kids to create in anticipation of Halloween, and lasts longer than a typical candle luminary. Halloween luminaries can be used as decorative lawn or house ornaments throughout the month of October, and are safe for use indoors, even in a child's room or displayed on a windowsill. Take an hour of your day to make these creepy luminaries with your kids this Halloween.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Orange or white paper bags
  • Black permanent marker
  • Small glow sticks
  • Sand or small stones
  1. Step 1

Place a white or orange paper bag face-up on a flat surface.

  2. Step 2

Draw a scary face on the bag with a Sharpie or another permanent marker.

  3. Step 3

Fill the bag with sand or small stones. Use only enough to cover the bottom of the bag. Ideally, you should weigh down the bag so it doesn't fly away in a strong wind.

  4. Step 4

Crack a glow stick to engage it. You can purchase glow sticks in bulk at your local party store or follow the links in Resources. Put the glow stick inside the paper bag.

  5. Step 5

Turn out the lights and put your luminary outside. It will glow a creepy greenish-yellow just in time for Halloween.

Tips & Warnings
  • Place many Halloween luminaries up and down your driveway to light the way for trick-or-treaters and guests.
  • Do not ingest the contents of the glow sticks.
  • Keep glow sticks out of the reach of young children.
