Instructions

    • 1

Clear the land. You need a nice piece of land that is free of rocks and weeds in which to grow grass. Try to do this in the early spring.

    • 2

Buy sod. Growing grass from seed is too difficult. Sod will give you an instant lawn. Go to West Coast Turf (see Resources below). By filling out a simple form and answering a few questions (what climate you live in and so on) they will give you a list of turf types right for that area and how to care for them.

    • 3

Lay down a layer of top soil and manure over the land you'll place the sod on. This will give the grass extra nutrients.

    • 4

Lay the sod. This is hard and long work. Be sure to lay it as soon as you can, as sod will dry out quickly in dry areas.

    • 5

Water the lawn. Be sure not to over-water. You don't want to drown the roots of your new lawn. A lawn in most parts of California needs to be watered three to four times a week for 10 to 15 minutes each time, depending on the turf type.

    • 6

Stay off of the grass for at least 2 weeks. You want to give the grass a chance to take root and grow.

    • 7

Seed when needed. If your lawn is getting a bald spot, buy some seed of the same grass species and sprinkle it on top. This should fill it in.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take into account where the lawn will be and how much sun/shade it will get.
