How to Make Snow Covered Glass With Epsom Salts

Christmas evokes visions of snow covered landscapes, frosted window panes, and candles set aglow to warm the hearts of chilly winter guests. Even if you live in a warm climate and can't enjoy the wonders of new fallen snow, you can still celebrate a white Christmas. This project creates a display of snow covered glass that is ideal for frosted window panes or snow covered ornaments for the tree. An ordinary glass vase covered in snow, sporting a bouquet of fresh evergreen boughs and berries, makes stunning centerpiece for any holiday gathering.

Things You'll Need

• Epsom salts
• White wine
• Newspapers
• Pie tin
• Bowl
• Paint brush
• Assorted glass objects

Instructions

1. Select a piece of glassware to frost. Wash and dry the glass to remove any dirt or residue. Cover a work area with old newspapers to catch drips.

2. Mix 1/2 cup Epsom salts with enough white wine to create a slush in a small bowl. Holding the glass over a pie pan, dip the paint brush into the slush mixture and brush or pat onto the glass in a random pattern. Hold the glass until the mixture dries slightly and then turn to coat the other side. Allow the glass to dry overnight. Display with candles for a wintry effect.

3. Coat the outside of hurricane lamps with the slush snow mixture and allow to dry completely. Display with a votive candle. Add a few evergreen boughs and cones to create a centerpiece for the table or to display on the mantle.

4. Gather an assortment of glass candle holders and coat with the mixture. Apply the slush randomly so that some areas are heavier than others and gradually get lighter towards the top of the candle holder. Display with brightly colored Christmas lights to create a festive atmosphere. Use brightly colored glass containers and cover with snow. Use as candle holders or display with miniature white lights for a dazzling display.

5. Frost windows with the mixture. Coat the corners of the window panes heavily and work to a lighter coat as you work away from the frame to simulate nature. Set lighted candles in the window for a warm welcome to winter guests.

6. Frost glass Christmas ornaments and display on the tree when dry.

7. Clean up with mild detergent and water. Remove the snow from the outside of glass containers by running under warm water and rinsing away any residue.
