A chunk candle is made with a twist on the standard candle making technique. There are two steps involving two sets of wax, allowing the candle maker to make a candle that is incredibly beautiful and unique. There are more candle making supplies needed, but the result is a spectacular candle.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Candle Wax
  • Pouring Pot
  • Wax Thermometer
  • Candle Mold
  • Candle Color
  • Candle Scent
  • Chunk Mold
  • Candle mold
  1. Step 1

Start with a design idea for your chunk candle. The way the chunks look should somehow contrast with the rest of the candle wax. That means choosing a color that will be different enough from the rest of the wax in the candle that the chunks will stand out.

  2. Step 2

Melt wax to make your chunks. Use an old pan that won't be used for cooking and heat the wax until it melts, or update your candle making supplies with a new wax pouring pot. Be sure to use a wax thermometer in the pot so that the wax doesn't get hot enough to catch on fire. Heat the wax only until it melts and don't allow it to get any hotter.

  3. Step 3

Color the wax for the chunks and pour it into a chunk mold. The color should be bright, dark or otherwise noticeable. If the rest of the candle will be dark, consider making plain white chunks so that they will stand out. Use an ice cube tray or any other mold that will result in small pieces of wax. Alternatively, you can pour the wax onto a flat surface and let the wax cool before slicing wax chunks from the resulting flat wax.

  4. Step 4

Melt the wax that will be used for the rest of the candle. This wax will be the majority of the candle, so it will be the main candle color. Color it appropriately with candle color and fragrance it if you like. Mixing two fragrances is not recommended, so if the chunk wax is fragranced, choose the same fragrance for the rest of the wax.

  5. Step 5

Set up the wick in the main candle mold and fill the mold with the wax chunks. For a very chunky candle, stuff the candle full of them. If you want fewer chunks, it is possible, but it will take an additional step.

  6. Step 6

Pour the main wax into the mold, over the wax chunks. The wax you are pouring should not be any hotter than it takes to melt the wax. If it is closer to the flash point it will melt many of the chunks instead of creating the chunk design.

  7. Step 7

Add a few chunks once the wax has begun to cool if you want few chunks in your candle. Adding all of them at once will result in the top part of the candle being a chunk candle and the bottom of it being plain, because the bottom of the mold will be the top of the candle. To keep a more uniform appearance, add a few chunks every 10 minutes or so as the candle is cooling. This will keep some of the chunks held in place by the stiffer wax and will prevent all of the chunks from settling at the bottom of the mold.

  8. Step 8

Let the entire candle cool for a few hours before removing it from the mold. Arrange your candle making supplies for the next candle. You can use scraps from this candle to make chunks for the next one, including any unused candle making wax from the pot and any unused chunks.
