How to Replace a Coil Spring in a Hyundai Santa Fe

The fact that your Hyundai Santa Fe has coil springs instead of leaf springs in the rear suspension is unusual for a large vehicle. As with most large vehicles, the extra room makes it relatively easy to remove the springs from a Hyundai Santa Fe.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift your Hyundai Santa Fe and support it by the frame on safety stands, then use a transmission jack or similar equipment to support the lower control arm.

    • 2

Remove or disconnect the rear wheel, the flange nut and brake calipers, the parking brake assembly and cable, the wheel speed sensor and the rear shocks.

    • 3

Lower the jack supporting the control arm slowly and remove the rear coil spring from your Santa Fe. Pay careful attention to how the spring is seated and oriented as you remove it.

    • 4

Place a new spring in place and carefully lift the control arm jack until the spring is properly seated.

    • 5

Reconnect the rear shocks and wheel speed sensor, the parking brake assembly and cable, the flange nut and brake calipers, then replace the rear wheel you removed in Step 2.

    • 6

Move the transmission jack that was supporting the control arm out of the way and then carefully lower your vehicle to the ground. Road test to ensure the spring is operating properly; listen for strange sounds and feel for unusual riding characteristics that might signal improper installation.
