How to Install a Water Pump in a Toyota Tundra
Toyota's heavy duty trucks need special attention when they begin to leak coolant or overheat. This guide focuses on installing a water pump on the most basic Toyota Tundra engine, the 2GR-FE. The other Toyota engines have more parts to remove, but you can still follow the same general directions.
Things You'll Need
- Screwdriver
- Large container
- Jack
- Jack stands
- Engine support device
- Adjustable wrench
- Water pump
- Gasket
- Water pump bolts
- Torque wrench
- O-ring
- Coolant
Instructions
-
Removing the Old Pump
-
1
Unscrew the negative battery cable with a screwdriver. Lift the car using an automotive jack, and then place it on jack stands and support the engine with a lift or similar device.
-
2
Position a large container under the drain hole to catch the discharged coolant. Open the cap on top of the radiator and unplug the drain plug underneath the radiator.
-
-
3
Use an adjustable wrench to remove the radiator and support to the frame seal on the left side. Then, remove the V-bank cover, fan shroud, air cleaner assembly, two oil cooler hoses, inlet hose, radiator hoses and five water bypass hoses.
-
4
Unbolt the five bolts retaining the water inlet pipe and o-ring inside the pipe. Remove the gasket from the water pump.
-
5
Check the engine support and then use the adjustable wrench to remove the two bolts on the number two idler pulley sub assembly and a/c compressor connector.
-
6
Undo four more bolts that will allow you to separate the compressor from the belt tensioner assembly. Remove them.
-
7
Record the configuration of the retaining bolts, marked A and B. Remove the water pump retaining bolts and the pump. Clean the mount and discard the pump, o-ring and gasket.
Installing the New Pump
-
8
Place the new water pump on the mount. You won't need sealant for the gasket on a Tundra. Hold the water pump and gasket in place as you secure it with the new bolts.
-
9
Put the new bolts into the water pump. The bolts are marked on the head with two numbers: A or B. Torque the A bolts to 80 inch pounds and the B bolts to 17 foot pounds of torque.
-
10
Install the belt tensioner assembly and the rest of the parts in the order you removed them. Use a new o-ring in the water inlet pipe.
-
11
Replace the drain plug on the bottom of the radiator. Remove the jack stands and engine support. Lower the Toyota Tundra to the ground.
-
12
Attach the negative battery cable to the post and tighten the screw on the clamp. Refill the radiator with the amount and type of coolant specified in your owner's manual.
-
13
Start the engine and check for leaks. Clean up any spilled coolant, which is toxic to people and animals.
