If your vintage VW Beetle has a burned out rear signal light, you must replace the bulb immediately. Driving without a signal light is not only unsafe, but illegal. Fortunately, replacing the bulb is an easy fix that you can do yourself. Here's how to replace the bulb in a 1970's model VW Beetle.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Replacement bulb
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Replacement gasket, if necessary
  • Clean cloth
  1. Step 1

Visit your local auto parts store and purchase a replacement bulb. You'll need to know the year and model of your VW Beetle in order to get the correct replacement bulb.

  2. Step 2

Disconnect the negative battery cable before you begin.

  3. Step 3

Remove the screw holding the turn signal light lens on the rear fender with a Phillips screwdriver and lift the lens off of the signal light assembly. Inspect the gasket for dryness, cracking or dry rot and replace it, if necessary.

  4. Step 4

Push the burned out bulb in slightly, turn it counterclockwise and pull it out of the socket. Wipe out the socket with a clean cloth to be sure it's free of corrosion and install the replacement bulb.

  5. Step 5

Put the lens assembly back into place and replace the screws holding the lens.

  6. Step 6

    Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  7. Step 7

Turn on the ignition and make sure the rear signal light works.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's a good idea to wear gloves when replacing a turn signal bulb. The oil and dust from your fingers can cause the new bulb to burn out much sooner.
