Instructions

    • 1

Identify the crank pulley, the largest pulley at the bottom of the engine block. Locate the number one ignition wire. The number one wire is the furthest on the driver's side in a four cylinder engine and the front left wire on a six cylinder.

    • 2

Start the car and allow it to idle until the cooling fan comes on to ensure it's running at normal temperature. Turn off all accessories such as lights, radio and air conditioning.

    • 3

Locate the service check connection under the right side kick panel or behind the center of the dash. Bend a paperclip into a "U" shape and insert it into the service check connection.

    • 4

Connect the timing light to the battery and then to the number one ignition wire. Aim the timing light at the crank pulley or timing belt cover if equipped.

    • 5

Align the red line on the crank pulley with the center line on the timing light. The line to the right of center on the timing light is plus 2 degrees while the left mark is minus 2 degrees.

    • 6

Adjust the ignition timing by loosening the distributor mounting bolts and turning the distributor until the red crank pulley mark aligns with the center timing light mark.

    • 7

Tighten the distributor mounting bolts and recheck the timing. Remove the paper clip from the service check connection.

Tips & Warnings

  • Improperly adjusting the timing causes serious and permanent damage to an engine. Consult with a professional if you have any questions.
