Instructions

    • 1

Get tie rods that are specific to your Ford Taurus. The parts can vary from model year to model year, so you want to get the ones meant for your vehicle.

    • 2

Disconnect the cable to the negative post of the battery. Use a lug nut to loosen the lug nuts on the front tires, then jack up your car. When you have it safely supported on jack stands, remove the tires.

    • 3

Loosen the bolt that connects the tie rod to the steering rack. Mark the position of the tie rod in the toe rod adjuster with paint or a marker, then loosen the nut that secures the tie rod.

    • 4

Unscrew the tie rod, making sure you keep track of the number of turns it takes. Write that number down.

    • 5

Make marks on the new tie rod so that they match those on the old tie rod. Screw the tie rod on and keep track of the number of turns. Tighten the nut to 36 to 46 foot pounds.

    • 6

Put the other end of the tie rod into the steering rack, and put in the bolt. Tighten it to 23 to 26 foot pounds.

    • 7

Repeat the steps for the other tie rod, then put back on the tires. Tighten the lug nuts to 95 foot pounds. Reconnect the cable to the battery, and get your Taurus aligned.
