How to Make a Blender Self-Cleaning

Blenders can be tough to clean by hand because they have so many nooks and crevices at the bottom. Fortunately, they're perfectly designed for self-cleaning; they're watertight and they have their own built-in agitators. All you need is some hot water, dish soap and about one minute to spin your blender clean and then spin it dry.

Things You'll Need

  • Electric blender
  • Hot water
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Dish towel
  • Completely empty and rinse the blender in the sink. If your blender was most recently used to make something chunky like salsa, you will want to shake out as much of the food as possible.

  • Fill the blender about 2/3 full with hot water. Place the blender pitcher on its electric cradle and drizzle in a dose of liquid dish soap. Put the lid on tight and run it at top speed for about 15 seconds.

  • Remove the lid and pour the soapy water out. Rinse the pitcher in the sink, then fill it 2/3 of the way full with hot water once again. Put it on the cradle, replace the lid and run it at top speed for another 15 seconds.

  • Take the lid off once more and pour out the water. Put the pitcher back on the cradle, but leave the lid off this time. Run the blender at top speed for about 10 seconds to dry out the blending blades.

  • Wipe down the inside walls of the pitcher and the underside of the lid with a clean, dry dish towel. Replace the lid and return the blender to its designated storage place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't rely on this technique as your blender cleaning solution for all cleaning jobs. In cases of particularly messy residue or dried, caked-on food, hand cleaning may be the only way to get it completely clean. Use this technique for light-duty messes, like after you make cocktails.
  • Use caution when drying the blades automatically with the lid off of the pitcher. Make sure no one sticks their hands or fingers into the pitcher.
