Step 1
The portfolio is the most important part of an art school application. You'll need to start creating your portfolio at least a year before you apply.

Your portfolio should center around a cohesive body of work in a similar style or with a similar ideology. When creating your portfolio, keep in mind the discipline for which you will apply.

If you want to pursue an MFA in Sculpture, your portfolio should have work that relates in some way to "sculpture" as a discipline, no matter how conceptual it might be.

Artic, as the School of the Art Institute of Chicago is affectionately called by students, loves edgy and conceptual work. Take risks and keep an open eye to the ultra-contemporary work being produced today.

Step 5
When you have 30 or more quality pieces, take clear, well lit photos of your best work. Take the best 20 images and submit them as your portfolio.
