Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Replacement brake lines
  • Jack and jack stands
  • Tire iron
  • Line wrenches
  • Vinyl tube
  • DOT 4 brake fluid
  1. Step 1

Lay out the entire replacement brake line kit made for your Passat. The best kits should come with six to eight lines made of stainless steel wrapped in PVC and a maximum of 20 inches long. Read all instructions that come with the kit.

  2. Step 2

Support the car on jack stands and remove the first wheel. Trace the brake line from the hose to the last section connected by bolts.

  3. Step 3

Study the existing section of brake line and bend the replacement line in the same way.

  4. Step 4

Remove the brake line from the car by disconnecting the bolts with a line wrench. You'll need two line wrenches for the two bolts on each connector.

  5. Step 5

Install the replacement line. Thread the bolts by hand, and then tighten with your line wrenches.

  6. Step 6

Bleed the brake system to remove air from it. Open the bleeder valve on the caliper and connect it to a container of brake fluid with a vinyl tube. Have another person hold down on the pedal to purge the air.

  7. Step 7

Replace the wheel and repeat the process for the other three sections. Refill the master cylinder reservoir with DOT 4 brake fluid and test the brakes after all lines are replaced.
