How to Change the Oil in a Nissan Maxima
A Nissan Maxima takes about 3 liters of oil during an oil change. The oil changing process doesn't differ from other Nissan models. You need a 14-mm wrench and 5W-30 oil for this oil change. Change the oil approximately every 7,500 miles.

1
Lift your Nissan Maxima using a jack and then place the car on jack stands. If you don't have jack stands, drive the Maxima onto wheel ramps.
-
2
Pop the hood and remove the dipstick and oil filler cap. The dipstick has a circular yellow handle and the oil fill is on the front valve cover.
-
-
3
Gather an oil drip pan, a 14mm wrench, strap oil filter wrench, cleaning cloths and a new oil filter. Slide under your Nissan Maxima.
-
4
Locate the oil filter and oil drain plug underneath the car. Look on the bottom of the oil pan for the drain plug, and the filter is underneath the engine block.
-
5
Remove the oil drain plug using the 14mm wrench. Pull the plug and let the oil drain 10 to 15 minutes into the drip pan. Check the threads and gasket for damage. Replace if necessary.
-
6
Take off the oil filter using a strap-type oil filter wrench. Dump the old oil into the oil drip pan and put on the new oil filter. Tighten the oil filter by hand, and then replace the oil drain plug using the wrench. Clean off the excess oil.
-
7
Move the jack stands, lower the Nissan Maxima or drive it off the wheel ramps. Go under the hood and add oil. Turn on the engine and check the oil pressure gauge to make sure it rises.
-
8
Let the car run for a minute, and then turn off the engine. Take an oil reading on the dipstick. If the oil level isn't at full, add more oil.

Tips & Warnings
Never dispose of oil in the regular trash. Fill used plastic containers with the oil and drop it off at a gas station or auto parts store that has oil disposal units.
If the oil pressure gauge doesn't rise when you turn on your Nissan Maxima, turn off the engine and add more oil.
