How to Replace the Taillights in a Toyota Highlander
Whether you use your Toyota Highlander for off-roading or hauling groceries through the burbs, make sure you always replace its taillights when they burn out. The replacement bulbs only cost a few bucks and installing them is a breeze, so there's no reason not to do the job yourself.
Things You'll Need
- #7443 replacement bulb (2001-2007 models)
- Flathead screwdriver (optional)
Instructions
-
-
1
Remove the keys from the ignition and engage the emergency brake for safety. Also, make sure the headlamp control is in the "OFF" position.
-
2
Walk to the back of your Highlander and open the liftgate.
-
-
3
Find the rectangular taillight assembly cover in the back of the trunk. Pry it open with your fingers or with a flathead screwdriver.
-
4
Locate the bulb socket holding the broken bulb. Once you've found it, twist it counter-clockwise and remove it from the assembly.
-
5
Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket and replace it with the new bulb. Toss the old bulb into the garbage so it doesn't become a hazard.
-
6
Press the bulb socket into the taillight assembly and turn it clockwise to secure its position.
-
7
Test the new bulb to make sure it works before closing the assembly cover, replacing the trunk trim and shutting the trunk.

Some bulbs are hard to reach in tight areas. Handle the taillight and socket with care upon removal and installation so they don't drop into the body cavity below. It is next to impossible to retrieve, and you will end up needing another bulb and socket.
