Things You'll Need:
- Tuned instruments capable of playing in pitch.
- Percussion instruments that won't overwhelm the tuned instruments.
-
Step 1
Drone music is a type of music similar to rock and roll. However, drone music centers around playing a single tone and it's harmonics for a longer period of time than a rock song. Drone music with few chord changes may last for as long as thirty minutes to an hour. Drone songs without chord changes may last for hours.
-
Step 2
Drone songs may have percussion and/or vocals. Vocals are not common in modern indie drone music. They have, however, been used in prototypical drone bands, such as the Velvet Underground.
-
Step 3
Typically, the shorter the drone, the less abstract it is.
-
Step 4
To start a simple drone, play a rhythm on a percussion instrument. Have your band members play in time with the percussion instrument, all around the same tone or chord.
If there are shifts in tempo, and tonality, they should happen slowly. -
Step 5
People with limited musical experience can join in your drone. Make sure they play the right note or chord.
