Leaving the doors on a vehicle unlocked can be dangerous. Passengers can inadvertently open a door and fall out of a moving vehicle, resulting in serious injury or even death. This is especially true when the passenger happens to be a child. Intruders can also easily enter a vehicle that is stopped at a red light through an unlocked door. In an accident, passengers are more likely to be thrown from the car if the doors are not locked. These are all good reasons to lock the doors when you go for a drive. The Chevrolet Lumina comes equipped with rear door security locks. It is a good idea to know how to engage these locks so you can use them when needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the rear driver’s side door. Find the rear door security lock located toward the back of the car door.

    • 2

Insert a key or small bladed screw driver into the slot of the lock lever. Move the lever up toward the outside of the car until it locks in the “Engaged” position. Close the door.

    • 3

Move to the passenger side of the vehicle. Repeat Steps 1 and 2. The rear doors are now locked and will not be able to be opened from the inside.

    • 4

Unlock the doors from the inside, then move to the outside of the car. Open the rear doors from the outside by pulling on the door handle release.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always inform rear seat passengers that the rear door security lock system is engaged.

  • Disengage the rear door security lock system by reversing the procedure.

  • When leaving your vehicle, always remove and secure your keys, set the locks from the inside of the vehicle, get out and then close the door.

  • The power lock on the inside door handle on the driver’s side can be used to lock or unlock all doors in the vehicle.

  • These instructions are specific to the 1996 Chevrolet Lumina Sedan. Procedures may vary slightly on other years and models. Consult your owner’s manual for details.

  • Never leave a child unattended in a locked car even for a few moments.

Hi Mike, I really need your help. I just bought a chevy lumina (1996) for my 18 year old son. The problem is that the child safety locks are stuck in the "on" position. We bought it from a police auction and since it was a former police vehicle I think they may have disabled the locks. We tried pushing the lever from on to off but it wont unlock the child lock. What do you think? My son is so frustrated, he feels like a chauffeur because he has to get out of the car to let his friends out. thanks Mike , Patty
