For formal events or on special days, a chignon is the ideal hairstyle. It is a simple variation on a traditional bun that allows a woman to wear her hear away from her face while still creating a sleek, elegant, glamorous look. The best thing about a chignon is that anyone with any hair type can wear the style, including African-American women, whether they wear their hair naturally curly or chemically straightened.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Comb
  • Bobby pins
  • Moisturizing hair product
  1. Step 1

Evaluate your hair length and texture. Your hair must be long enough to pull into a ponytail to make an attractive chignon. The longer your hair is, the better the hairstyle looks.

  2. Step 2

Straighten your hair with a flat-iron if it is very curly, to make it more manageable. If your hair is already straight, comb out the tangles completely.

  3. Step 3

Use your usual moisturizing product or gel. Spread a small amount throughout the hair, from root to tip.

  4. Step 4

Pull your hair into a low ponytail near the back of your neck. This is a temporary ponytail, so it doesn't need to be perfect.

  5. Step 5

Use your comb to split your ponytail into two sections. Twist one section under itself in a complete rotation. Keep it in place with a bobby pin or two.

  6. Step 6

Repeat the above step with the second section. Pull the section of hair fully around itself, then secure it with bobby pins.

  7. Step 7

Put the finishing touches on your chignon. Tuck in any stray hairs and apply hair spray to set your hairstyle for all-day wear.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your hair is thin or fine, tease it out a little bit before you begin styling.
