How to Replace Power Window Switches in a Car

At some point, it may be necessary to replace the power window switches in your car. Power switches can fail before the rest of the car, either from getting wet or dirty or simply wearing out. Some switch problems can result from dirty contacts, so clean the switch before replacing it.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Switch or switch assembly
  • Note the part number for your switch from your dealer or user manual. Purchase a new switch from a dealer or auto parts store. A cheaper solution is to pull a used switch from a car that's the same model as yours at a scrap yard. You can purchase just the switch or the switch assembly, which includes the rockers and bezel.

  • Insert a flat head screwdriver under the switch bezel and pry it until the bezel comes loose. Push down on the locking tab. Pull the plug loose.

  • Look for tabs that hold the switch in place. Press a screwdriver against the tabs to pry the bezel from the switch.

  • Clean the old switch to see if this will fix the problem. Mark the front of the switch with a piece of tape. Disassemble the rockers from the switch and blow into the switch with canned air. Plug it back in to see if it works. If not, unplug it.

  • Attach the rockers to the new switch. Snap the switch into the bezel. Push the locking tab into place. Insert the assembly into the bezel.

  • Plug the assembly into the outlet in the door. Push the assembly into place. Test the rockers. Press the switch assembly firmly into place.
