Things You'll Need:
- Flash light
- Know where you service panel is / Breaker box
-
Step 1
If the power has gone out in a single room or your whole house. It is most likely a tripped breaker switch.
This can be cause by having to many electrical devices on in that room OR you could have a short in a Switch , Plug or Cord -
Step 2
First turn off or unplug all the lights a electrical devices in the effected room or through out the whole house if you have totally lost power.
If you leave everything turned on or plugged in the breaker switch will most likely just trip off again. -
Step 3
Locate your Electrical service panel. It can be located on the outside of the house, inside the garage , in a closet or utility room , some are in clear view inside a house.
-
Step 4
You may need a flash light , so have one handy.
Open the service panel . You will most likely see a bunch of switches. Check them all & see if any are in the OFF position , or in the middle ( HALF OFF )position. Once you have located the tripped breaker. Click it all the way to the OFF position , Then click it all the way to the ON position. It works similar to a wall switch in the house. BUT to turn it back on it has to be first clicked all the way to the OFF position then back on. -
Step 5
Wait a about 20 seconds to see if it will trip OFF again. If it stays on you have reset the breaker switch & you are ready to go back & turn on the lights in the effected room back on & to plug in the things you unplugged. But don't turn on everything , That is why the breaker tripped in the first place
If the breaker switch trips OFF again. You either haven't turned off or unplugged the electrical device or devices that tripped the breaker in the fist place or you have a SHORT in a switch or Plug. -
Step 6
If the breaker keep tripping you may have a bad or frayed electrical cord on something. WITH IT UNPLUGGED Carefully check all the electric cords in the effected room one at a time , If you find a bad or frayed cord , discard the device or have the cord replaced.
-
Step 7
If your still having problems with the breaker tripping off & you have checked all the cords & have not turned everything back on , you may have a bad Breaker Switch or there is a more serious problem with the wiring in you home.
Contact a licensed electrician & have him check it out. -
Step 8
Electricity is nothing to mess with if you don't know what you are doing. It can kill you or cause a fire.
