How to Make a Skateboard Company

Skateboarding is an increasingly popular sport in the United States. If you are a board designer and interested in starting your own skateboard company, you need to be prepared for some hard work. Starting any business is risky, but with proper planning, and maybe a little luck, you can open your own successful skateboard company.

Things You'll Need

  • Marketing Plan
  • Skateboard designs
  • Work space

Make a Skateboard Company

  • Create a marketing plan for your skateboard company. This entails identifying your competition--other skateboard companies in your local market and in the virtual market. You'll also need to identify what will make your skateboards different from the competition, who your target market will be, and how you will market your company and products.

  • Design your line of skateboards. If you plan to use original designs, you'll need at least a dozen design choices to start up your company. If you plan to sell other people’s designs, you will need to establish a relationship with board designers and either license their designs for a specific period of time or set up a profit share arrangement.

  • Determine where you will be manufacturing and selling your skateboards. If you don’t have a lot of startup capital to work with, you can start by manufacturing your boards at your house or in your garage. As your business grows, you can find a larger work studio. You could also sell your boards online. This will reduce your overhead expenses considerably and potentially help you to make a profit sooner.

  • Make your company legal. Apply for a business license with your city or county. Another order of business: Purchase product liability and general business liability insurance. You will need this protection because you're manufacturing products that could cause injuries or malfunction.

  • Market your products. Consider marketing both online and in print . Market to your local area first. A good way to do that is by showing off your boards at local skateparks and skating events. Then branch out by marketing your boards online via a website, blogs and YouTube demonstrations.
