Pre-hung doors are units that include both a door and frame with the hinges already installed and functional. By using these units, the average homeowner can install a new exterior door in their home easily, and with little chance for mistakes. The typical pre-hung exterior door wll be installed into 2x4 or 2x6 wood framing and will require little structural build-out or demolition.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure the rough opening size for your door. This is the dimension of the space into which you will be placing your pre-hung door. With 2x6 framing, this opening will typically be 3' x 7', with an extra half inch along the width and height to allow for ease of installation.

  2. Step 2

Select and purchase your door. Pre-hung exterior doors are available in every material, color and design you could desire. Your local home improvement store or door distributor will be able to advise you on this purchase.

  3. Step 3

Remove and dispose of your existing exterior door, if applicable.

  4. Step 4

Slide the pre-hung unit into the opening, being sure to center it within the space. Use three nails on each jamb to temporarily hold the unit in place, but do not hammer these nails all the way in yet.

  5. Step 5

Check the spacing along the head and jambs to ensure they are level. Use wooden shims to level out the unit if necessary. Do a final check with your level to confirm the unit is plumb before proceeding.

  6. Step 6

Finish nailing the unit in place. Once you are confident the unit is level, use nails along both jambs to nail the unit securely to the 2x6 framing members. Countersink the temporary nails you used earlier as well, and use nails to secure all shims.

  7. Step 7

Weatherproof the opening. Stuff fiberglass insulation into the gap between the pre-hung door unit and the 2x6 framing. Nail the door trim kit into place to cover this gap and apply a caulk joint at the seam between the trim and the wall.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not proceed with nailing the unit into place until you have confirmed that it is level along both jambs and along the top. Doors that are out of plumb will not function properly, and could pose a security risk.
