How to Make a Wind Chime Using Old Keys

Windchimes use the natural breeze to create sounds and music. Making a wind chime from old keys is a great craft project for kids using things they’ll probably be able to find around the home. Using household items for crafts will provide an inexpensive activity, as well as teach children how creatively reuse things instead of throwing them away. It’s a great activity to teach kids how to use a ruler and how to tie knots or for adults trying to provide unique homemade gifts to give family and friends.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 sturdy sticks approximately 12 inches long
  • 6 pieces of yarn approximately 20 inches long
  • Got glue gun
  • 20 old or unused keys

Instructions

    • 1

Place one stick down on a flat surface and place the second stick down on top of the first stick so they form an "X."

    • 2

Holding the two sticks together with your thumb and index finger, take one piece of yarn and crisscross it over the center to hold the sticks in the "X" position.

    • 3

Place a small dab of hot glue on the end of the yarn holding the sticks together to hold it in place.

    • 4

Tie one piece of yarn to both ends of each stick and the fifth piece of yarn around the center. All five pieces of yarn should be hanging down from the sticks. Put a small dab of glue on each knot to secure it

    • 5

Starting with the center string, slip the end of the yarn through the hole at the top of the key and slide the key onto the yarn all the way to the top where the yarn meets the stick. Tie a knot in the yarn to secure the key.

    • 6

Slide a second key onto the same piece of yarn and secure it with a knot approximately 4 inches down from the first key.

    • 7

Slide a third key onto the same piece of yarn and secure it with a knot approximately 4 inches down from the second key.

    • 8

Slide a fourth key onto the yarn and tie a knot to secure it at the bottom of the yarn.

    • 9

Repeat Steps 6 through 9 with the remaining strings.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have more keys, you can add them by tying the keys closer together or by making the yarn longer.

  • You can also use fishing line, twine or cord in place of yarn.

  • Children should only use hot glue with adult supervision.
