Thresholds are as important as the door unit itself is. If not properly installed, they can lead to deterioration of the bottom of the door unit and will add to the utility cost of cooling and heating a house. Remember to note whether the threshold is over a concrete floor or a wooden one. In order to choose the right threshold for a door, several factors need to be considered. They type of exterior door is a key factor in choosing the correct threshold. A steel door, for example, will have a different threshold than a wood door. Also, some doors come with weather stripping attached to the bottom edge of the door. This means that when you replace this weather stripping, using the same manufacturer is recommended. .

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Remove the old threshold carefully so there is minimal damage to the area underneath it. After it is removed, fill holes as needed to make the surface is as smooth as possible.

  2. Step 2

Measure the distance between the bottom edge of the door and the floor. When choosing the new threshold, use this measurement to be certain the threshold will fit properly.

  3. Step 3

Remove all weather stripping before cutting it to the needed width. Measure the width of the door opening and mark the threshold accordingly. Cut the threshold to that length with a hacksaw.

  4. Step 4

Be certain to have all weather stripping and screws needed. Lay the threshold into place and secure it with the screws. If installing over concrete, use a masonry drill bit to pilot holes for concrete screws.

  5. Step 5

Measure and cut the weather stripping to lengths needed before installing them where they need to go. A good pair of scissors is the best tool for this. Install all weather stripping in place. Open and close the door to check proper sealing of the threshold. Adjust the weather stripping if necessary.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always wear safety glasses.
  • When driving screws into concrete, use caution to not strip the threads by over tightening.
  • Keep a tube of silicone caulk nearby if needed around the edge of the threshold where it meets the
  • floor.
  • To make a smooth bead of caulk, use a wet fingertip to run along the bead.
  • Thresholds come in many styles. Be certain the one you choose will meet the need of your particular door.
  • Use caution when handling the threshold after cutting it. The edges could cut fingers.
